Reunions and Comebacks - The Groups Joining Back Together After Years Apart

Ten years ago, Produce 101 introduced a new project-group model in K-POP by forming temporary groups from 101 contestants across multiple agencies. Two of the most successful outcomes were IOI (2016) and Wanna One (2017), and now both groups are reconnecting with fans again.

Produce project group reunion story

IOI

IOI formed in 2016 after the first season finale of Produce 101. Their lineup included:

  • Lim Na-young
  • Kim Chung-ha
  • Kim Se-jeong
  • Jung Chae-yeon
  • Zhou Jieqiong
  • Kim So-hye
  • Yoo Yeon-jung
  • Choi Yoo-jung
  • Kang Mi-na
  • Kim Do-yeon
  • Jeon So-mi

The group saw major commercial success through charting tracks and advertising deals, with fan-favourite songs including Dream Girls, Whatta Man, and Very Very Very.

Because IOI was the first project group of its kind, management rules were still evolving. Members could pause activities to debut with their own agencies, which led to lineup absences and heavy schedules. Later project groups moved to stricter fixed-term promotion rules.

Although a reunion was first discussed in 2019, plans were delayed and cancelled before being revived in 2026. Swing Entertainment confirmed a reunion comeback, minus Mina and Jieqiong, to mark the group's 10th anniversary. It also includes a pre-release track, Goodbye with a Smile, originally recorded in 2016.

Wanna One

Wanna One debuted in 2017 through Produce 101 season two with this lineup:

  • Yoon Ji-sung (leader)
  • Ha Sung-woon
  • Hwang Min-hyun
  • Ong Seong-wu
  • Kim Jae-hwan
  • Kang Daniel
  • Park Ji-hoon
  • Park Woo-jin
  • Bae Jin-young
  • Lee Dae-hwi
  • Lai Kuan-lin

Wanna One were also a huge success, from sold-out concerts at Gocheok Sky Dome to major endorsement activity. Their final concert took place on December 31, 2018.

The group has now announced a reunion linked to their reality show. Kang Daniel and Lai Kuan-lin will appear in the show but are not joining the comeback itself due to separate circumstances. A final comeback date is expected to be announced soon.

With IOI and Wanna One both reuniting in this era, fans are hopeful this will spark more reunion projects from older K-POP groups.
