Throwback to 2016: A look back on the best K-POP and K-DRAMA releases from 10 years ago

Written by Maddie F. (Mar 1st, 2026)

If you've been on the internet recently, you'll see that 2016 has been trending. Everyone is looking back on where they were 10 years ago, and I didn't think I felt old, but seeing some of the old fashion trends makes me feel very old. Like everything, K-POP has also changed so much in 10 years, with new groups, new sounds and of course, new outfits. Let's have a look back in time and see what was trending back in 2016.

The Fashion

Throwback to K-POP 2016

Looking through the K-POP stages of 2016, we get a good idea of the fashion trends of the time, from sporty looks with Twice, in their Cheer Up and TT stages, to a lot of denim and white T's in Seventeen's Very Nice. If I was to pick two items of clothing that identified 2016, I would say the tennis skirt and ripped jeans. The tennis skirt was everywhere, from Red Velvet to G-Friend to Twice, and the ripped jeans made many appearances in almost all boy group stages. If I was going to have a special mention for one more item, it would be the choker. BTS loved a choker for their Blood, Sweat and Tears era, but by no means were they the only ones. Do you think there are any trends we still see now in K-POP (or any we should have left behind?!).

Survival Shows

K-POP survival shows 2016

2016 saw the start of an iconic K-POP survival show series that really changed the K-POP scene forever, Produce 101. Here, 101 female trainees from different agencies and countries competed to form a temporary K-POP group of 11 members chosen by the public. While the first season did not have the same popularity as the following seasons, its influence was massive, and it started a trend for many more survival shows afterwards. We'd later learn these shows were not as honest as they seemed, but at the time, they made for a fun watch.

Other notable shows include Show Me The Money, at this point on its fifth season, which showcased the best rappers from across the country. Many of the winners of these shows are big names in music to this day, and Show Me the Money is now on its 12th season!

New Artists

2016 saw the debut of some of the most famous K-POP artists today, such as Blackpink, NCT 127 and NCT Dream. But it wasn't just limited to groups, we also saw the solo debuts of artists such as Dean and pH-1, two powerhouses of K-HipHop and R&B. Who's your favourite in the list?

K-Dramas that had us all hooked

When looking this up, I could not believe the amount of iconic K-Dramas that 2016 gave us! To start, we had one of my all time favourites, Signal, which mixed time travel and crime solving to create a tense but exciting watch. On a lighter note, we also had rom-coms such as Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo, Cheese in the Trap and Love in the Moonlight. But the big one of the year was Descendants of the Sun, which took the world by storm! This drama is still considered a classic today and is up there with some of the best. Are there any dramas here you'd like to see a season 2 of?

2016 is definitely a year to look back on for its music, shows and more!
